Allied Methanol and Técnicas Reunidas Sign Agreement to Advance Integrated Methanol and Blue Ammonia Project
Allied Methanol Pty Ltd and Técnicas Reunidas S.A. have signed an agreement to support the development of an integrated methanol and blue ammonia production facility in Australia. The project was originally announced for Darwin, Northern Territory, and is designed to combine methanol and blue ammonia production within a single industrial platform.
The agreement contemplates that Técnicas Reunidas will undertake the front-end engineering design once the required project financing has been secured. Completing this engineering phase will position Técnicas Reunidas to participate in subsequent phases, including detailed engineering, equipment and materials procurement, and construction management.
The proposed facility is intended to use Haldor Topsoe technology and was announced with nameplate capacities of approximately 1,350 tons per day of methanol and 415 tons per day of blue ammonia. At the time of announcement, the project investment was reported at approximately United States dollar 800 million, with full execution remaining subject to the outcome of the front-end engineering design, project financing, and required permits.
A key feature of the project configuration is its lower-carbon design, which was announced as being capable of reducing carbon emissions by approximately half compared with traditional production technologies. This reinforces the strategic role of integrated project development, technology selection, and disciplined execution in advancing lower-emission industrial production.
Methanol remains a globally important industrial product used across chemicals, manufacturing, fuels, marine applications, and energy-related value chains. Blue ammonia is widely relevant to fertilizer production and is increasingly being evaluated for future low-carbon fuel and energy-carrier applications. Together, the products support a broader industrial platform aligned with long-term market demand, cleaner production pathways, and energy transition priorities.
For Allied Methanol, the agreement highlights the value of partnering with experienced global engineering teams to move complex industrial projects from concept to bankable development. For Técnicas Reunidas, the project aligns with its broader participation in energy transition markets, including hydrogen value chains, circular economy, bioproducts, carbon capture, and lower-carbon industrial solutions.
